Job Description Job Description THE AMERICAN SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF ANNOUNCES AN OPENING FOR HVAC Technician CLOSING DATE : UNTIL FILLED REV: 12/18/2024 POST: 4/29/2025 The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners. ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. If shopping is on the list, then Blue Back Square, located in the center of town, offers many retail stores and a variety of restaurants to satisfy everyone. SCOPE OF DUTIES Summary: The HVAC Technician will install, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. PRIMARY DUTIES Installs new HVAC units in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings. Installs ductwork and thermostats to control HVAC system. Performs routine maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure they operate properly. Inspects and troubleshoots problems with existing HVAC units. Installs replacement parts on existing HVAC units. Maintains inventory of replacement parts and orders replacements. Complies with company and industry safety standards. Manage filter cleaning and changes as per schedule. Responsible for remote control of the system. Expected to respond after-hours and weekends to any on-premises needs. Will perform other facilities duties like setups / snow removal Will support both ASD campus in West Hartford, CT and Camp Isola Bella in Salisbury, CT; expected to make weekly trips to Camp in Salisbury for maintenance needs of those systems. Is a full member of the Maintenance team and is expected to perform other related duties as assigned including conference room table and chair set-ups, snow removal, etc. Responsible for remote control of existing Building Management System (BMS). REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: An active S1 license is desired; if license is not held at hire, it must be attained within 6 months of employment. Must be issued by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. Commercial experience necessary. Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS). Knowledge of code requirements. Ability to accurately write up necessary parts, supplies and equipment specific to each job. Ability to diagnose and properly repair system and unit problems and install new equipment. General maintenance on systems and units. Safe and proper usage of tools used in the trade. Perform work as requested by Management. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS S1 license required. High School Diploma / GED required; vocational and/or technical school training required. 2 or more years of work experience required. Ability to work in either Indoor or Outdoor environments; not all work is guaranteed to be Indoors. Ability to climb ladders and work on Rooftops. Ability to work in other areas under the Maintenance team umbrella. Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems and equipment. Ability to use power and hand tools. Ability to use thermometers, pressure gauges, and other testing devices to evaluate HVAC system. Ability to read operation and repair manuals for HVAC systems. Ability to follow instructions. Excellent mechanical skills. SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation range is based on experience and available upon request Outstanding benefits package including Retirement with school matching, group health insurance, and other fringe benefits. $1000 sign on bonus after one year of service ASD is ALL ways able.
