The Barley Merchant is a locally and independently owned restaurant & taproom located in the Walnut Grove area of North Langley at Thunderbird Centre near the Colossus movie theatres. We pride ourselves on offering an upscale gastropub experience with a focus on fresh, local ingredients, handcrafted creativity, and a passion for BC craft beer. Recognized as the best place in BC to drink beer two years in a row from the Growler Awards, we also feature BC-produced craft ciders, spirits, and wines. We are excited to expand our team and are currently hiring a Sous Chef to help us craft memorable dining experiences as we evolve our concept. About the Role As a Sous Chef at The Barley Merchant, you will work closely with our Executive Chef, Hiran Perera, to lead our culinary team, ensure efficient kitchen operations, and contribute to menu development. You'll be part of a ‘from scratch’ kitchen where nearly everything is made in-house with passion and precision — a perfect environment for aspiring chefs eager to innovate. Your Responsibilities Assist the Executive Chef in daily kitchen operations, including food prep, safety, and sanitation Lead by example in maintaining proper food safety, hygiene, and cleanliness standards Monitor food preparation to ensure adherence to recipes, portion sizes, and food costs Train and mentor kitchen staff, fostering a culture of learning and future leadership Collaborate with the team to minimize waste and optimize ingredient use Manage food cost and labor productivity through high standards and training Oversee high-volume night service, including prep, execution, and overnight procedures Ensure the kitchen remains organized, efficient, and sanitary Partner with Chef Hiran on developing innovative dishes and menu ideas Track waste and work on strategies to reduce costs What You Bring to the Table 2 years of leadership experience in a high-volume restaurant kitchen Proficiency with various cooking techniques, tools, and equipment Passion for working with local ingredients and educating others about food Ability to confidently prepare sauces, handle game, fish, and other proteins Strong reading comprehension for recipes and working with your hands Well-organized, efficient, and able to complete tasks on time Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays Creativity, stamina, attention to detail, and a self-starter attitude Valid Food Safe Level One certification Bonus Skills (Not Required) Emergency First Aid Certificate Experience with restaurant openings Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary based on experience Tips shared via tip pool performance bonus based on P&L Extended health benefits Annual education allowance related to the industry Cell phone allowance Shift meals Total compensation estimated between $55,000 - $60,000 annually, including tips, bonuses, and benefits Equal Opportunity Statement The Barley Merchant is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive environment.
