Job Description
Overview Director of Finance role at Orient Express. The position reports to the General Manager and Regional Finance leadership and is responsible for strategic leadership of financial operations across the hotel assets, ensuring profitability and compliance. Job Description The Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and functional guidance to the General Manager, the Partner, the Executive Committee and Department Heads for optimal business decisions. Interact with legal counsel, insurance, tax consultants, auditors, banks and others to effectively control the assets of the business. Provide strategic leadership and business support for the management team through financial analytics, capital, projects, and operational finance matters; prepare short- and long-term plans, forecasts and budgets for capital and operating spend. He/she will be a highly motivated team player with strong accounting, communication, presentation, analytical skills, and a solid systems background. Manage the financial operations of the OE La Minerva to ensure asset security and profitability, and serve as the primary contact for all hotel financial and accounting issues with owners, auditors and regulatory agencies. Reporting to the General Manager and Regional Finance leadership. Duties And Key Responsibilities Use financial analysis, data trends and market information to anticipate needs, identify issues, and recommend actions to maximize financial return. Create the annual operating budget for the property and provide analytical support during budget reviews to identify cost saving and productivity opportunities for department heads. Analyse ROI for capital projects prior to committing funds and evaluate outcomes after completion. Maximize cash flow through inventory controls, credit and collection, disbursements, deposits and remittances. Manage day-to-day activities, plan and assign work, and establish performance and development goals for team members; provide mentoring and feedback. Educate, train and motivate finance and accounting teams to achieve hotel revenue goals; provide tools and market data to staff for decision-making. Promote teamwork and quality service through daily coordination with key department heads. Ensure accounting practices support guest experience, including payment options and financial dispute resolution. Develop and maintain acceptable accounting practices per company policy; implement financial control procedures and ensure compliance with regulations and contracts. Develop budgeting, forecasting, reporting and benchmarking to improve revenues and productivity; participate in local professional organizations. Manage hotel contracts (vendor leases/service contracts) and capital processes; ensure fixed assets tracking and depreciation. Provide accurate financial and management reports to hotel management, corporate office and owners; compare actual results to budget/forecast and maintain supporting records. Ensure compliance with internal controls and standards; support corrective action plans and risk mitigation efforts; encourage best practices for revenues and cost efficiency. Support succession planning and oversee cash flow; approve disbursements and ensure proper documentation and policy adherence. Protect owners and management company interests in hotel assets and operations and maintain a single chart of accounts, payroll and expense dictionary for consistent reporting. Develop, document and maintain internal controls and financial policies; monitor performance against standards. Manage capital processes and hotel-wide financial controls; maintain asset ledgers and compliance with laws and licensing requirements. Maintain safe keeping of leases, contracts and other legal documents; keep current on critical dates. Ensure the accounting department operates efficiently with succession planning for top positions; design methods to improve scheduling, labor standards, forecasts, and operational performance. Develop and monitor credit and collection procedures per corporate policies; perform other duties as assigned; may serve as manager on duty. Accountability Supervises clerical accounting staff in areas such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Credit/Collections, Purchasing, Audit, Payroll, and/or Accounting Operations. Compliance and Risk Management Ensure reporting compliance with policies and chart of accounts; reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly. Comply with all applicable laws and regulations; protect owners and management company interests. Maintain records and documents; conduct risk assessments, maintain a risk register and implement mitigation plans with regular reporting. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance and 5-10 years in hotel accounting or audit, with at least five years in a Director of Finance or similar role; an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable. Knowledge of hotel space leasing, payroll processing, asset management, projections and regulatory filings; professional designation is preferred. Technical Skills And Knowledge Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure; collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. Strong analytical and numerical skills with understanding of financial valuation; advanced MS Excel and PowerPoint; hospitality IT systems. Excellent written and spoken English and Italian; other languages desired; good interpersonal and influencing skills; strong problem-solving orientation.
