Job Description Job Description Job summary This dual-role position performs technical and analytical duties to support utility infrastructure projects and maintenance. This role involves both office-based work, such as interpreting and creating engineering drawings and updating mapping databases, and field-based work, including utility locates, inspections, and data collection. The technician works with various software programs and technical equipment to ensure the accuracy of utility records and the safe execution of projects. Essential duties and responsibilities Utility locating (Fieldwork) Respond to locate requests: Receive and prioritize service requests (e.g., 811 "Call Before You Dig" tickets) from contractors, engineers, and property owners. Perform fieldwork: Travel to job sites to accurately locate and mark underground utility lines. Interpret plans: Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, as-builts, and utility maps to aid in the location process and to verify existing records. Document findings: Maintain detailed records of all locates, including digital photographs, sketches, and field notes. Document any discrepancies between existing records and field conditions. Engineering support (Office work) Create and update CAD drawings: Prepare and revise construction and as-built drawings using AutoCAD. Ensure all plans follow company and industry standards. (Preferred) Maintain GIS data: Use ArcGIS or other GIS software to process field-collected data and accurately update the company's enterprise GIS database with the locations of utilities and other assets. (Preferred) Data integration: Import survey data and other field data from GPS equipment into CAD and GIS systems to create base maps and ensure data accuracy. (Preferred) Produce maps and reports: Generate maps, reports, and presentations for engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders. Use GIS for data analysis and visualization. (Preferred) SCADA system support (Fieldwork and Office Work) · Assist with the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) hardware and software systems. · Support field sensors, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and other control system instrumentation. · Collaborate with operations and engineering staff on SCADA-related projects and troubleshooting. Qualifications Required skills and experience Familiarity with interpreting utility maps, engineering plans, and record drawings. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with field crews, engineers, and clients. Good understanding of the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel. Ability to do field inspections and generate reports. A valid driver's license. Basic understanding of electrical systems. Preferred skills and experience Proficiency with CAD software, specifically AutoCAD. Experience with GPS data collection and mapping. Knowledge of standard utility locating practices and safety procedures. Experience with GIS software, such as the ESRI suite (ArcGIS, ArcMap). Basic understanding of IT systems. Ability to user surveying equipment. Understanding of property and land rights. Physical requirements Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Ability to walk over uneven terrain for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Comfortable working in and navigating confined spaces or near traffic. Education and certifications High school diploma or GED is required; an associate degree or technical training in drafting, civil engineering, GIS, or a related field is often preferred. Relevant certifications, such as a state-specific Utility Locator Certification, are often a plus.
